This Page vs. Shopping List
The shopping list is the “what to buy” page. This buyer’s guide is the “how to choose” page. Use this page to decide what fits your goals, then use the shopping list to place orders.

Decision Framework
You really need to think through what you want to accomplish with your lights, both in the short (this year) and longer term (next year and beyond). If you think you eventually want to expand to a larger musical light show with 10,000+ pixels or a MegaTree the first year, you might want to reconsider using WS2811 pixels. Please read our Twinkly vs. WS2811 Comparison article and the article on cost comparisons or try out our new Decision Wizard. WS2811 lights really do scale up better in the long run, but Twinkly works great for smaller shows and ease of use.
Twinkly lights come packaged in a variety of configurations, but all include 24 volt power supplies and controllers, so there’s no need to deal with those considerations or worrying about power injection like you would with WS2811 pixels — so Twinkly just works (via the Twinkly app) right out of the box after minimal setup. Once they are set up in xLights, however, Twinkly and WS2811 both behave more or less the same way.
There’s not really much risk in starting out with Twinkly and then expanding to WS2811 later — the two types of lights can work together in the same show!
Network and Audio Design Rules
Most Common Beginner Mistakes
| MISTAKE | WHAT HAPPENS | PREVENTION |
|---|---|---|
| Not investing enough in robust outdoor WiFi | “Lagging” lights during shows; entire Twinkly strings stop responding to FPP | Use an Outdoor WiFi Access Point, plugged into a dedicated Gigabit Switch just for light show ; see WiFi Troubleshooting |
| Not using dry boxes | Twinkly power supplies and controllers are only rated IP44 (splash resistant); in heavy rain or snow, they can experience water intrusion and fail | Use dry boxes for the power supplies and controllers where possible |
| Using Bluetooth in audio path | Audio/light sync issues | Use wired audio path end-to-end |
| Not rabbit / rodent proofing | Rabbits chew through low voltage wires (seriously) | Apply Liquid Fence or similar rabbit repellant |
| No spare parts kit | Long outages during show season | Be sure to have supplies on-hand to repair cut, broken or rabbit chewed strings |

FAQ
Should I read this or the shopping list first?
Read this page first, starting with the decision framework, then use the shopping list to purchase specific items.
Can I still start small using Twinkly, then expand into WS2811 later?
Yes. The framework is designed so small first-year setups can grow without replacing core infrastructure, and Twinkly and WS2811 can cohabitate.
