What is the ideal height-to-base ratio for a pixel mega tree?
As a general rule of thumb, a 2:1 ratio (Height to Base Diameter) creates the most visually balanced, classic Christmas tree shape. For example, if your mega tree stands 10 feet tall from the ground to the top pixel, your base ring should ideally be roughly 5 feet in diameter. If you prefer a sleeker, skinnier look, you can push the ratio closer to 2.5:1 (e.g., a 12-foot tree with a 5-foot base).
What should the vertical spacing be between my pixels?
For standard 12mm bullet pixels mounted on heavy-duty mounting strips, the industry standard vertical spacing is 1 inch to 3 inches center-to-center. 3 inches is an excellent budget-friendly choice for larger lawns, where the tree will be viewed from 40+ feet away and individual pixel spacing naturally blends together. 1 inch to 2 inches provides extreme density, making high-resolution graphics, text, and complex face effects look sharp and legible even from close distances. For seed pixels, 1 to 2 inches both work great, with 1 inch obviously giving you better resolution.
How far away should viewers stand to get the best visual effect?
Too close is worse than too far! If viewers stand too close to a dense pixel tree, the graphics dissolve into individual blobs of blinding light. For the best “wow” factor, place your mega tree at a viewing distance of 2 to 4 times the tree’s physical height. If your display forces people to stand within 15 feet of the tree, lower your pixel output level to 30%–50% in your controller settings to preserve graphic clarity.
Should I use a 180-degree, 270-degree, 360-degree or other tree layout?
- 180-Degree: Perfect if your tree sits directly against a garage wall or front porch where viewers only see it from the street. This saves you 50% on pixel costs while maintaining a full look from the front
- 225-Degree: I personally use a 225-degree tree, which uses 40 strands of a 64 strand topper — I use this because my tree is about 15 feet from the house, and it is possible people can see it from the left side — 225-degrees gives it a little bit more coverage on the side than a 32 strand 180-degree tree
- 270-Degree: Best for corner lots or wide lawns where cars drive past or people walk up from multiple angles
- 360-Degree: Necessary only if your tree is placed in the center of an open courtyard, cul-de-sac, or walk-up event where people can walk entirely around the prop
What does a “folds per string” (or “zig-zag” in xLights) wiring configuration mean in the calculator?
A “folded” or “Zig-Zag” configuration means that instead of running a fresh controller output for every single vertical strand, a single physical output string goes up to the top of the tree, loops over, and comes straight back down the adjacent string. Enabling Zig-Zag in your build layout allows you to cut your required controller outputs in half or more, maximizing the efficiency of your hardware. For example, I have a 10 foot high tree made from 2 inch spaced seed pixels, so 60 pixels per strand — the strings I’m using are 240 pixels, so fold or zig-zag 4 times (240 divided by 60), and because they are seed pixels, I can daisy chain 2 strings for a total of 480 pixels or 8 strands on the tree. This way my 40 strand tree only uses 5 controller ports, which frees up ports to control other props!
What percentage brightness should I run my MegaTree?
Due to the high pixel density of most MegaTrees, you don’t want to run them anywhere near 100% brightness, or they will be blindingly bright (people won’t be able to see effects). Most trees run at 25-35% brightness and look great. I run mine at 30% using seed pixels, and would recommend that as a good starting point, then adjust up or down based on how it looks in real life.
What is the “skip every pixel on top ring” checkbox for?
This is if you have for example a 64 strand MegaTree topper but are only running 32 strings evenly spaced for a 360-degree tree. Click this box and the calculator will factor in the correct spacing.
