Twinkly String Lights – Amazon Link
Twinkly uses proprietary firmware on their controllers — even though the controller uses an ESP32 chip, they cannot run WLED. Twinkly exclusively uses 2.4 Ghz WiFi — they can’t be connected directly to ethernet or 5 Ghz Wifi. They do have bluetooth if WiFi is not available to connect to phone.
The RGB bulbs are 4.3 mm across, which is much smaller (and lighter) than standard 12 mm bullet pixels, but from my experience they put out a similar amount of light — you can’t really tell the difference when watching a light show. Twinkly also makes RGBW versions where the bulb is 5mm if you want a version with true white capability. If one bulb malfunctions, the rest of the string continues to operate.
Power supplies are 24 volt DC plug in wall warts (wattage based on size of set you buy), using a proprietary connector to connect to the light string. The power supplies are water resistant (not water proof) and some people report that they end up with water damage if they are left out in the elements. For this reason I try to keep my Twinkly power supplies and controllers in dry boxes to extend their lives. The only power supply I have had fail had been out all winter unprotected.
Twinkly products are manufactured in China, and come with a one year warranty.
I highly recommend that you enclose the Twinkly power supplies and controllers used outdoors in dry boxes to avoid premature failure, since their IP44 rating is only considered splash proof. I have had great luck with this model from Amazon:
